About Us

Locally Grown for Over 100 Years

Avocados have been commercially grown in California for over one hundred years. However, our local farms are now facing extinction due to skyrocketing production costs and the unrestricted supply of foreign fruit that has driven prices down to unsustainable levels. California grown avocados are fresher and have a smaller carbon footprint than imported avocados. They also meet stricter quality standards, for food safety, environmental protection, and labor laws. Avocado Growers of California (AGC) believes that our local industry can become profitable again by improving production, cutting input costs, and strategically marketing our fruit to our local community. In addition, the AGC seeks ways to leverage state and federal government entities to aid in farm sustainability. Our State and local Governments recognize that having a thriving domestic agricultural economy and community is vital to the future of our country. The AGC strongly believes that through our collection of voices and our knowledge will be a thriving industry once again.

Who We Are

Avocado Growers of California (AGC) is a new grass roots advocacy group formed by growers to bring California avocado growers together, to collectively pool knowledge and resources, as well as, to help CAC and other industry partners gain perspective on what independent commercial avocado growers need to do to stay viable in California.

Our Mission

Avocado Growers of California (AGC) is an advocacy group for Independent California Avocado growers who exclusively farm and/or exclusively pack California avocados. AGC’s Mission is to help find solutions to save the eco-friendly, ethically sourced, California avocado farms. By doing so, we keep a vital domestic food source, save agriculture related jobs, help local economies, and promote “buying local”.

Our Story

The Avocado Growers of California came into existence from a California Avocado Commission (CAC) District 2 Growers meeting held on January 31, 2023, in Fallbrook. It was at this meeting a grass-roots group of 25 avocado growers formed, and they decided to meet in March 2023. During a brainstorming session, committees were formed, volunteers joined those committees, and AGC was born with the idea that a unified group of avocado growers will have a bigger voice, greater knowledge, and leverage our collective resources to promote sustainability.

Today

Our Objectives for a Sustainable Future

With momentum continuing and a growing membership of over 180 participants, AGC has already made excellent progress toward achieving our goals: AGC has sent representatives to local government meetings to reduce water prices and convinced CAC to sponsor a farmer- backed water detachment initiative in San Diego County, which passed. AGC compelled CAC to differentiate the California fruit in advertising and will continue to advocate for CAC and other industry organizations efficiently allocate our assessment fees to focus on grower needs and priorities. AGC also sent a letter to California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) asking to enforce and investigate the “conflicts of interest” on the CAC board of directors, who are both growers and import packers. Most recently, AGC uncovered a huge premium Mexican avocado growers and packers are receiving over California growers.

AGC is devoted to advocating for actions and initiatives to preserve the California Avocado Grower.
